And much thanks to you for sharing these tokens speaking for this story. It is indeed a very old story. I hope you are right: that we are on the initial wave of a paradigm shift which will undercut the old hierarchies of domination and humiliation through "compliance". Land ownership is as much a brutal innovation of agrarian hegemonies of power as any other system in which those who sing are yoked and lashed by those who scream. I hope we will beat the odds, that some of our children will live to see such banal tyrannies overturned.

But stories such as yours are old stories now. And one after another, they do not inspire much confidence in hope. Where is there, on all this continent, one square patch of free ground, of true commons? It is either privately held by corporate fiefs or else cordoned as lands "owned" by the imperial apparatus, managed as inland colonial ventures by shady, power hungry bureaucrats who fancy their degrees provide godlike wisdom yet have never seen the lands they "manage". We will need massive coordination and insurrectionary spirit to establish the wide ranging permacultural zones necessary to provide a legal shield for natural lifeways. But the forces arrayed against such projects are vast, mighty, hostile, worldly potentates. They will mercilessly crush or coopt any movement toward true sustainable living long before it can gain the critical mass necessary to topple them. And such a movement would need the fiercest subtlety, canniest agility. And to be honest, we have no organizational matrices anywhere near fit for the task.

Perhaps the great apocalyptic collapses of empire's nightmare will have to reach fruition before the needful changes become apparent to those ensconced in imperial privilege. Until then, perhaps for many years to come, we can only keep the scattered coals hot through desperate dedication, and whisper the forbidden truths to our children.

What else can be done? Your struggle for relation with your homeland is beautiful and desperate. What will you take as you move onward, cast out onto the unknown as so many others have been? I'd be curious to know how you will sing of this, how it will feed your children's children as a teaching myth.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
